FAQ
HOW DO I GET STARTED WITH LEARNING WEIGHTLIFTING?
You can get started in weightlifting by coming along to a new member session. We'll book you into a group session so you can see how people train in group sessions, meet some members and see what the facility is like. One of our coaches will talk to you about things like your sporting background, if you have any injuries and how often you would like to train. This will give the coach an idea of what kind of program would suit you.
The next step is to get set up with a club membership and QWA membership, and then come along to the coached sessions to start your weightlifting program. Members that are new to weightlifting must only attend coached sessions. The coach will give you the attention you need in the group sessions to learn the basic weightlifting movements. You can attend open gym when you have an enough knowledge about weightlifting technique to train with confidence and safely.
HOW DO I JOIN MILTON WEIGHTLIFTING?
Email info@miltonoly.org to set up a monthly subscription. All payments are processed on the first day of the month. If you join part way through the month, you can make a partial payment to cover training to the end the month. After this a monthly subscription will be set up and this is processed with a credit card through Square payments.
In addition, you will need to join the Queensland Weightlifting Association. Use the 'member sign up/login' button to set up an account and then choose the option to become a member. This membership will provide insurance cover for your training and for competitions that are held away from the Milton Weightlifting facility. In addition, membership provides funding for to operate QWA.
WHAT HAPPENS IN A GROUP TRAINING SESSION?
The Milton Weightlifting facility has 10 platforms and a lot weightlifting training equipment. Most people train in weightlifting for between 90 minutes to 2 hours per session, however new members may be given a shorter program of about an hour. Each session typically includes technical work to improve snatch, and clean and jerk technique, and then following this, strength work (e.g. press, squats) to improve strength for weightlifting.
The coaches will move around the area and give feedback and help to people as needed. New members will need more attention and are given cues to help them learn. Members that have trained in weightlifting for longer can work more independently through their program, however still need feedback to prevent problems and make improvements.
WHAT GEAR DO I NEED TO GET STARTED?
There isn't much you need apart from you normal gym exercise clothing and shoes. However, weightlifting shoes really help. You don't need them to get started but they are good to have once you know you'd like to continue with weightlifting.
The club keeps spare used weightlifting shoes that you can try to get an idea of how they feel etc.
WILL I BE GIVEN A PROGRAM TO FOLLOW?
When you start, we'll try to pair you up with a coach that will be there when you would like to train (e.g. before work or after work hours).
This coach will provide a program to follow that is suited to your level of training, specific goals or improvements you would like to make (e.g. competition, gain strength) and also to suit the time you would like to spend at training. The coach will also help you with any changes you need to programming and help you work through the training with feedback on your lifting and progress.
You can change coaches or work with your own program or external coach. However, you will need to make sure the committee and coaches are aware of this.
